ORTHOPAEDIC MATTRES

Bedding, duvets, pillows, toppers etc)

Whilst a mattress is the orthopaedic component of a bed, there are other items of bedding that contribute to the comfort of a bed and aid in restful sleep. These bedding items include everything from sheets and duvets, to blankets and pillows. The bed’s appearance can also be enhanced with a valance, a throw and some kind of headboard detail, although these items will not assist in the beds performance.

Quilts

A quilt acts to regulate the body's temperature at night and a good quilt will have the ability maintain the body at a comfortable temperature without feeling hot or stifling. Quilts are bought with an insulation rating (called a Tog rating) that classifies the thermal qualities of the quilt.

Many people find quilts superior and easier to maintain than blankets and for this reason they are the most popular form of bed covering. Quilts are also made from special materials that are hypo allergenic and usually prevent dust mites.

Quilts can be maintained and their insulation properties adjusted by shaking them to distribute the insulating material around different pockets of the quilt. This can enable the quilt to sleep cooler or warmer depending upon the ambient temperature.

Pillows

Orthopaedic pillows are described separately, please see the page, Orthopaedic pillows for information about memory foam and latex foam pillows.

Blankets and sheets

The alternative bedding insulation approach to a quilt is the traditional blanket and sheet, both of which can be doubled up for extra warmth. This kind of bedding allows layering to vary the thermal heat retention properties of the bedding and hypo-allergenic sheets are available for those who require them.
