ORTHOPAEDIC MATTRESs
Cheap mattresses
Today you can buy a mattress very cheaply. In fact you can often buy mattresses that utilize memory foam and Latex foam for the same price as a cheap spring mattress.
The big question is however, are these cheap mattresses any good?
You will find memory foam mattresses on the internet from as little as 99 dollars or 75 pounds Stirling - Realistic prices are of course some what higher. Even so, this is remarkably cheap for the technology involved and the sleeping characteristics of these mattresses. It literally sound too good to be true – so is it?
With mattresses, just as with every other product, you will get what you pay for. However, cheap memory foam mattresses are usually pretty good, the major drawback to them is that they may not have the recovery (spring back) rate of more expensive versions and this may lead to their lifespan being more limited.
If you buy a cheap memory foam mattress and expect it to last 10 years or more, then also expect a disappointment. These mattresses are thinner than their more expensive counterparts and they do not include multiple layers of foam. Then again, if you take this budget piece of memory foam for what it is, you will get a good body moulding mattress with orthopaedic properties and it may serve you well for 3, 4 or even 5 years.
With spring and coil mattresses you generally pay for the coil count. Cheap mattresses have fewer coils, a lower density of coils (spring) and poorer filling and ticking. This does not stop them working, but it means that they will work less well and for a shorter period of time.
What you pay for
As you move up the price range of mattresses you start paying for quality. This can mean better and thicker memory foam, a larger number and density of smaller springs and better finishes and aesthetics to the mattress.
In essence you will get what you pay for and, as you pay more, the quality of the raw materials, the complexity of the construction, and the finished appearance of the mattress will improve.
When you get to the top end of the mattress market you are talking about thousands of pounds or dollars, but you are also talking about mixing mattress technologies, multiple mattress layers and mattress longevity. You will also see extended warranties and trial test periods associated with the purchase.
The decision on what to buy
If you really want a mattress for high orthopaedic qualities and a long lifespan, then you will need to go beyond the budget of the "special offers" and very "cheap" mattresses.
However, if you want a low cost mattress, or if you are unsure of a technology like memory foam, cheap mattresses offer an alternative and one that is improving all the time.
These cheap mattresses are in great supply and competition and probably represent the best value of any mattress price sector. It is also true to say that in many cases (e.g. memory foam) the price that you pay very much undervalues the composition of the mattress itself. So these mattresses really are good value for money.
