ORTHOPAEDIC MATTRESS
Looking after a mattress
You can extend the life of a mattress and keep it fresh and clean by following a few simple steps.
Please note that if any of the steps below conflict with the manufacturer’s mattress care guidelines for your mattress, you should be guided by the manufacturer’s recommendations only.
Mattress care
Always inspect your mattress at any and every opportunity (e.g. when you change the bedding or remove the mattress protector) and look out for dirt, stains, damage or wear.
If a mattress is under warranty, spotting a problem as quickly as possible will make obtaining a replacement or a repair a simpler process.
If there are signs of dirt or minor damage, early DIY treatment may be effective in resolving the problem.
You can then follow the care regime listed below.
1. If your mattress is NOT one sided, flip it over every time that you change the bedding. If your mattress is a NO–flip mattress, then reverse the top to bottom orientation every time that you change the bedding.
Doing this prevents (or reduces) localised deflections in the mattress at points where the hips and shoulders rest.
2. Protect the mattress with a mattress protector or mattress topper. This should ideally be waterproof and should be washable if possible. It will protect the mattress from sweat, spills and accidents and enhance the life of your mattress.
3. Clean the mattress surface using a very soft brush or an upholstery attachment from a vacuum cleaner. Mattresses made of memory foam or Latex will be naturally repellent to dust mites, however their coverings may not be. Mattresses made from springs or composite materials tend to be more prone to dirt accumulation than those made from foams.
4. In the event of a stain or visible dirt appearing on the fabric, use a light upholstery cleaner to carefully clean the mattresses cover fabric. Always ensure that water and cleaning liquids are not allowed to pass through the fabric protecting the mattress and reach the construction below. If the mattress becomes wet at any time, make sure that it is left in a well ventilated room and that it is not used until it is completely dried out.
